Family Sponsorship

The Family Sponsorship Program is designed to facilitate the reunification of families in Canada.  If you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you can sponsor certain family members from abroad to immigrate to Canada.

Individuals who are eligible to be sponsored are immediate family members of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.  Immediate family members include, for example spouses, common-law partners (including same-sex couples), children under 18 years of age, parents, grandparents and siblings under 18 years of age.  The criteria that must be met before a family member is eligible to be sponsored will vary depending on the circumstances of the case.

A family sponsorship application is commenced in
Canada by the potential sponsor.  In order to qualify as a sponsor, you must demonstrate that you are able to financially support each family member you are sponsoring.  This financial requirement does not apply to a spousal sponsorship (where you are sponsoring a spouse to join you in Canada).

Our lawyers can advise you about whether the family member(s) you are interested in sponsoring is eligible to be sponsored. We can then prepare your sponsorship application for you, and demonstrate to Citizenship and Immigration Canada how you meet the sponsor requirements.
